Until 27 August 2020, American Express is offering up to $400 of credit on everyday expenses to its Platinum cardholders. This credit should help offset the $1,450 annual fee, especially due to the coronavirus preventing many of the great travel perks from being used.
I’m sure AMEX were experiencing many customers either cancelling their card or calling to find out their options. Which is fair enough due to the high annual fee and value coming mostly from travel related perks. I think this is a great offer for cardholders and will likely retain many for American Express for at least another year.
Where can you spend to get the credit?
- Coles (excluding Coles express and online gift card purchases)
- Woolworths (excluding Woolworths Metro, Caltex and online gift card purchases)
- David Jones (excludes egift card purchases)
- Deliveroo
- Harris Farm
How long does this promotion last?
Until the 27 August 2020.
AMEX have provided a very reasonable time frame to take advantage of this offer. Roughly 3 months, which if you are doing your grocery shopping at Coles or Woolies should allow you to take advantage of all the credit available.
Is the Platinum Charge card worth it?
During normal times when travel is possible, there is a strong argument to be made for the value for this card. However due to the coronavirus, this card loses a lot of its appeal due to many of the perks and benefits being related to travel. And with travel possibly being affected for years to come, the value proposition of this card is in jeopardy. Unless AMEX reworks this card to make it more friendly for a lower travel environment.
