Looks like VA (Virgin Australia) could be on the road out of VA (Voluntary Administration) and end up in a good position. After a tough few months due to COVID-19 and previous financial troubles, Virgin Australia had to enter voluntary administration in April 2020. But there are now signs the airline can head out of this crisis in a strong position. They have two remaining bidders for the business as part of the voluntary administration process. They have also been increasing flights in line with government regulations and demand.
They have even re-enabled booking flights with points, which was turned off during their first months of voluntary administration.
Partner points transfers are back!
Flybuys and AMEX memberships rewards have both re-enabled the ability to redeem their respective points for Velocity points. This is great news as during most of the voluntary administration, points transfers had been deactivated from most of Velocity’s partners.
Are my Velocity points still safe?
While they are technically still in voluntary administration, there are good signs that Virgin will be alright. The two remaining bidders remain keen for the business and the return of points redemptions and points transfers from partners are good signs. So I am hopeful Virgin Australia will come out of this situation alright. Of course we won’t know until the administration is wrapped up successfully or Virgin receives a government bailout.
Petition to save Virgin Australia!
There is even a petition on change.org to the Australian Government to provide support for Virgin. The main idea behind the petition is that Virgin is large employer in Australia, firing thousands of workers itself and providing tourism to many areas of Australia, boosting those local economies. Many also argue the benefits of having two major airlines in the country to ensure there is enough competition and that a monopoly doesn’t ensue.
